Carbon Monoxide Safety and Awareness Week

Whereas, Carbon monoxide is a lethal poison that is invisible - colorless, odorless and tasteless; and,

Whereas, Each year, the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that more than 200 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning, and thousands more suffer from the effects of undetected carbon monoxide; and,

Whereas, Improper venting of appliances including furnaces, water heaters, range tops, ovens as well as fireplaces and portable heaters, and even the idling of vehicles in garages attached to buildings can also cause potentially harmful levels of carbon monoxide; and,

Whereas, Michigan utilities are continuing to work to educate their customers and the general public about carbon monoxide, its symptoms and how to prevent it; and,

Whereas, In addition to education, the single best ways to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning are to keep furnaces and other appliances in proper working order by having regular inspections and tune-ups, and by installing carbon monoxide detectors with audible alarms in homes and businesses; and,

Whereas, Public education and awareness is an important key to protecting the residents of Michigan against carbon monoxide poisoning; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of November 4, 2003, as Carbon Monoxide Safety and Awareness Week in Michigan.
