Whereas, All families are at risk of either natural or manmade disasters at any
time; and,
Whereas, Tens of thousands of families across the nation face evacuation and
displacement due to natural and manmade disasters such as hurricanes, floods,
tornadoes, fires, and chemical spills each year; and,
Whereas, There are more than 150 million companion dogs, cats, birds and horses
living in more than 78 million U.S. households (and another nearly 20 million
companion reptiles, rodents, fish and livestock); and,
Whereas, Despite the high priority animals have in our daily lives, many animals
are injured or killed during disasters simply because they were overlooked during
the disaster planning process that each family undertakes; and,
Whereas, Families care deeply for their animals, many refusing to seek safety
or shelter without their animals; and,
Whereas, When disasters strike, United Animal Nations’ Emergency Animal
Rescue Service volunteers may be called upon to work with local animal shelters
and rescue organizations to rescue and care for animals during disasters; and,
Whereas, To raise awareness about animal disaster preparedness, United Animal
Nations, a national animal advocacy organization, sponsors the annual Animal
Disaster Preparedness Day; and,
Whereas, United Animal Nations recognizes Animal Disaster Preparedness Day
by distributing disaster tips with advice on how to prepare and care for animals
during disasters; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim May 15, 2004, as Animal Preparedness Day in Michigan.
