Whereas, Organized structurally as non-profit corporations, charter schools are
independent public school districts authorized by either a local school district
board, intermediate district board, community college, or public university board;
and,
Whereas, Charter schools, also known as public school academies, are subject
to the leadership and general supervision of the State Board of Education, as
well as the monitoring of its authorizing public board; and,
Whereas, There are over 200 operating charter schools in Michigan, with a combined
enrollment of over 70,000 students; and,
Whereas, The dedication of charter schools in providing a quality education
to their students contributes to the statewide effort to establish a world class
education system in Michigan; and,
Whereas, In order to build a strong and successful future for our state, it
is imperative that we continue to work together to provide greater educational
opportunities for our children; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim the week of May 3, 2004, as Charter Schools Week in Michigan.
