Whereas, May 25th has annually been proclaimed as “National Missing Children’s
Day;” and,
Whereas, The children of today are our citizens of tomorrow and our children
are the nation’s most valuable assets; and
Whereas, They are our link to the future and their protection and safety must
be one of our highest priorities; and,
Whereas, More than 1,457 missing children were reported to police in Michigan
with locating and safely returning these children to their homes is a national
and international objective and in addition to the already existing crimes against
children, we now have a serious additional threat due to the expansion of internet
technology; and,
Whereas, The Michigan State Police and the Michigan Family Independence Agency,
along with criminal justice officials, missing children’s organizations
and concerned citizens across the nation are joining together to observe May
25th as “National Missing Children’s Day”; and now therefore
be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim May 25, 2004, as Missing Children’s Day in Michigan,
and I encourage all citizens to observe Missing Children’s Day by taking
an active role in the search for missing children by taking the time to really
look at the pictures of missing children that are on posters and mailings posted
at your local law enforcement and public agencies, or on missing child web sites,
because you may be the one that can help bring a missing child home. During
the month of May, we can “Picture Them Home” and reunite a missing
child with their family.
