Whereas, On December 17, 1903, the Wright Brothers achieved the
first powered flight of a “heavier-than-air” aircraft, and thus opened
the door to some of the greatest accomplishments and events ever witnessed by
human-kind in the past century; and,
Whereas, Since that date, Michigan, which also happens to
be the birth state of aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh, has become a recognized
leader in the aerospace industry. As home to the Ford Motor Company, founder
Henry Ford understood that the Wright brothers' historic flight would lead to
monumental changes in transportation; and,
Whereas, Henry Ford and his son Edsel B. Ford, laid the home
to the aviation, including developing the world's first solo nonstop flight
across the Atlantic Ocean; and,
Whereas, The Ford Motor Company has announced it is the presenting
sponsor of the Experimental Aviation Association’s (EAA) Countdown to
Kitty Hawk Centennial Celebration, a traveling aviation program commemorating
the centennial of the Wright Brothers first flight; and,
Whereas, The future of aviation is dependent upon a well informed
and educated populace, and this celebration of powered flight is also a celebration
of the ingenuity and creativity of Americans, as well as America’s contributions
to air and space flight; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State
of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the months of May through December 2003 as Centennial
of Flight Celebration Months in Michigan.
