Whereas, The gardeners of our Great Lakes State produce foods for our people and
enable us to export foods to other countries in need; and,
Whereas, Our gardens also yield flowers of great variety and breathtaking color;
these flowers bring beauty into our lives and satisfy our aesthetic needs; and,
Whereas, Gardening instills in our people, young and old, a greater appreciation
of for nature in and for the State of Michigan in particular; this appreciation
naturally leads to a greater respect for the care of the environment; and,
Whereas, In addition to being beneficial for our state, gardening furnishes
a pleasant and productive full and part time activity for a large number of
our citizens; and,
Whereas, Maintaining our heritage of beautiful gardens and preventing the shrinking
of our green areas is an important mission of the State of Michigan; and now
therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State
of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of June 1, 2003, as Garden Week in
Michigan in recognition of the significant role gardens play in our environment
and in the quality of our lives by providing nourishment to all living things
as well as bringing beauty to our surroundings.
