Whereas, The United States Army is celebrating its 228th birthday on the 14th
of June, 2003; and,
Whereas, On this occasion we recognize our Army for its long history of serving
the United States from before the birth of our country until now with a firm
commitment to the protection of the values which the United States and democracy
stand for; and,
Whereas, Members of the United States Army have brought great honor to our
nation and have given true meaning to the highest standard of patriotism and
service; they have voluntarily forgone comfort and wealth, accepted the necessary
sacrifices, and even given their lives so that we and others around the world
may live in freedom; and,
Whereas, Today the members of the United States Army continue their proud service
in many roles, including that of peacekeeper, giver of humanitarian aid, and
war-fighter; and,
Whereas, Current events have given us a renewed appreciation for the members
of the United States Army, and we thank those who are currently serving in the
Persian Gulf and around the world in our country’s fight against terrorism;
and now therefore be it,
Whereas, Upon its 228th birthday, the people of the State of Michigan recognize
those who served our country in United States Army by wearing an American uniform
in defense of this great country; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State
of Michigan, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2003, as Army Appreciation Day in Michigan.
