Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month

Whereas, Myasthenia Gravis, meaning serious muscle weakness, is a neuromuscular disease affecting the voluntary muscles of the body; and,

Whereas, Those who are afflicted with this disease have nerves that cannot communicate with their muscles, resulting in symptoms such as drooping eyelids, blurred vision, slurred speech, difficulties in swallowing or breathing, and limb weakness; and,

Whereas, Diagnosis of Myasthenia Gravis is often difficult; however, once the disease is identified, persons affected have much reason for hope since the majority of cases can be controlled with medication and surgical treatment; and,

Whereas, Medical Science has not yet been able to discover the cause or a cure for Myasthenia Gravis, however great promise lies in continued research and increased public awareness of this serious and widespread disease; and,

Whereas, The Myasthenia Gravis Association Detroit Chapter in Southfield, Michigan, seeks to draw attention to this affliction and to help patients get the assistance they need for prompt diagnosis and ongoing medical treatment; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the month of June, 2003, as Myasthenia Gravis Awareness Month in Michigan.
