Whereas, May signifies the beginning of a new growing season for over 125
commodities grown commercially in Michigan, and a time for celebrating the beauty,
bounty, traditions and resources of our state during Michigan Week; and,
Whereas, Michigan's food and agriculture industry, our state's second largest
industry, contributes over $37 billion to our state's economy each year; and,
Whereas, Michigan's integrated network of family farmers, processors, wholesalers,
retailers, and consumers work to ensure a safe and nutritious food supply enjoyed
by millions throughout our state, the nation and the world; and,
Whereas, In addition to fresh commodities, Michigan's food processing industry
adds value to Michigan crops and livestock, producing a variety of products
from pastas, sauces, and wines to jams, hot dogs, apple pies and much more -
virtually any product desired; and,
Whereas, Survey results show that Michigan consumers prefer to purchase Michigan
grown and processed products, and the Select Michigan, Select Michigan Fresh
and Select Michigan Organic logos help consumers identify Michigan products
at the retail level; and,
Whereas, Selecting Michigan food keeps our food dollars circulating in our
local communities, adds value to Michigan's family farms, improves the quality
of life of our citizens in both rural and urban areas, and preserves our rich
agricultural heritage; and,
Whereas, Michigan's bountiful natural resources draw millions of tourist each
year, a series of promotions will be staged throughout the Summer and Autumn
at major festivals and arts and crafts fairs; at these promotions consumers
will be offered the opportunity to sample Michigan specialty food products and
exhorted to “Take Home a Taste of Michigan”; and now therefore be
it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim May, 2003, as Select a Taste of Michigan Month, and I encourage
all citizens to “Select a Taste of Michigan” food and agriculture
products year-round.
