Whereas, Preston Thomas Tucker was born in Capac, Michigan in 1903, and eventually
made Ypsilanti his hometown, where his vision for building a completely new car
developed; and.
Whereas, The radically designed 1948 Tucker sedan, of which only 51 prototype
cars were built, included features such as the use of a rear-mounted helicopter
engine, its pop-out safety windshield, padded dash, and center headlight--which
turned with the steering wheel--put the car years ahead of the competition;
and,
Whereas, The Tucker '48 combined styling, performance, handling, safety and
comfort unlike any American car of that day, and the public swarmed to get a
glimpse of it; and,
Whereas, For the nearly 600 Tucker Club members, made up of enthusiasts, collectors,
historians and Tucker owners, visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan in June, 2003,
holds great significance, as Michigan is the home of the club's Historical Collection
and Library and the place where the Tucker legacy began; and,
Whereas, The Tucker Convention is held at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel in Grand
Rapids, Michigan, June 19-22, 2003; celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Preston
Tucker's birth; the 15th Anniversary of the release of the George Lucas &
Francis Ford Coppola movie "Tucker: The Man and His Dream" starring
Jeff Bridges; the 30th Anniversary of the Tucker Automobile Club of America;
and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim June 21, 2003 as Tucker Motorcar Day in Michigan. This day
honors the significant contribution of Preston Thomas Tucker to the automotive
industry, his indomitable spirit and drive in creating the Tucker '48 Motorcar,
and the Tucker Automobile Club of America, Inc., for their championing the idea
that one person's dream can make a difference.
