Whereas, Recent statistics provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration show that there were 499 alcohol related traffic fatalities among
youth under the age of 21 in April and May 2001; and,
Whereas, There is an average of eight alcohol related traffic fatalities among
youth under the age of 21 each day; and,
Whereas, The potential danger for young people to be involved in alcohol related
crashes escalates during the summer months; and,
Whereas, The Century Council, a not-for-profit organization funded by America’s
leading distillers and committed to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking,
has planned a series of initiatives aimed at educating students, parents, teachers
and lawmakers throughout the month; and,
Whereas, The American School Counselor Association has partnered with The Century
Council to bring this important message to teens and their parents throughout
the country; and,
Whereas, The State of Michigan is working to enlist support to reduce the potential
for alcohol related fatalities by providing the public with information aimed
at achieving this goal; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim May, 2003, as Prom and Graduation Safety Month in Michigan.
