Whereas, Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed non-skin cancer and the
second leading cause of cancer-related death among men; and,
Whereas, According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated
1,200 deaths and 7,800 new cases of prostate cancer in Michigan in the year
2003; and,
Whereas, Throughout the United States, the number of deaths from prostate cancer
has more than doubled over the past 30 years; and,
Whereas, Research suggests that men can reduce their risk of prostate cancer
mortality if they follow recommended prostate cancer screening guidelines; and,
Whereas, Increased awareness and use of early detection practices by men is
essential to controlling prostate cancer; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan,
do hereby proclaim September, 2003, as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month.
