Michigan Homeless Persons Memorial Day

Whereas, Adequate housing is essential for healthy families and communities; and,

Whereas, The combination of rising housing costs and a shortage of rental and single family housing has led to an increasing demand for alternative shelter; and,

Whereas, There are too many persons and families in Michigan with no place to call home; forcing their dependence on family, friends and other shelters; and,

Whereas, Each year too many people in our state and country die from the cold and other threatening climates; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim December 21, 2003, as Homeless Persons Memorial Day in Michigan and I urge all citizens to learn more about the housing crisis we are facing, and to contribute in whatever way they can to the care and shelter of Michigan’s homeless.
