Better Hearing and Speech Month

Whereas, There are over 1,000,000 citizens in the state of Michigan who have either a speech, language, or hearing disorder; and,

Whereas, Communicating effectively impacts learning, socialization and emotional development, and is important to us all as we strive to reach our individual potential; and,

Whereas, The ability to read, write and understand others is critical to securing employment, to establishing and maintaining relationships, and to living a fulfilling and enjoyable life; and,

Whereas, Communication specialists, speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and teachers of people with hearing impairments are just some of the diverse and multi-talented professionals trained to help those with speech, language, or hearing impairments maximize their communication skills; and,

Whereas, “Better Hearing and Speech Month” offers us all an opportunity to thank those who work so diligently and tirelessly to open up the world of communication to those affected by a hearing or speech impairment; and,

Whereas, This observance allows citizens of Michigan an opportunity to witness the outstanding and remarkable inroads being made in the education and rehabilitation of those suffering from communication-related disorders; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2005, as Better Hearing and Speech Month in Michigan.
