Whereas, Geology and the other earth sciences are fundamental to the safety, health, and welfare of the citizens of Michigan; and,
Whereas, The earth sciences are integral to locating, developing, and conserving water, mineral, and energy resources needed for Michigan’s continuing prosperity; and,
Whereas, The earth sciences provide the basis for preparing for and mitigating natural hazards such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, sinkholes and shoreline erosion; and,
Whereas, Geological factors of resources, hazards, and environment are vital to land management and land use decisions in Michigan; and,
Whereas, The earth sciences contribute directly to our understanding and appreciation of and our respect for Michigan’s natural heritage; and now therefore be it,
Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim the week of October 8, 2006, as Earth Science Week in Michigan.
