Immigrants Day

Whereas, The Statue of Liberty has been the symbol of freedom, hope, and opportunity for millions of immigrants since its dedication in 1886; and,

Whereas, For centuries, people from countries around the world have come to our great nation with the hope that they would be able to secure a better life for themselves and their families; and,

Whereas, Our nation's great ethnic diversity and multi-cultural character has provided us with boundless energy and strength, and contributed significantly to our growth, progress, and prosperity; and,

Whereas, Millions of immigrants who settled throughout the vast territory of the United States supported the ideals of independence and liberty, and demonstrated the dedication and perseverance that made their dreams come true; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim October 28, 2007, as Immigrants Day in Michigan.
