Lyme Disease Awareness Month

Whereas, The health and well-being of the citizens of the State of Michigan is of foremost importance; and,

Whereas, Lyme disease is a common, but frequently misdiagnosed illness that, if not caught early and treated properly, can cause serious health problems; and,

Whereas, Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, caused by the Spirochete Borrelia Burgdorferi, which is usually transmitted by the bite of an infected tick; and,

Whereas, There are no age limitations or ethnic boundaries on whom this disease can affect; and,

Whereas, Lyme disease can cause early symptoms such as a rash or flu-like symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headaches and fatigue; and,

Whereas, Proper tick removal is imperative and if done correctly and quickly, can aid in preventing disease; and,

Whereas, The Michigan Lyme Disease Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization that encourages all health care providers in the State of Michigan to learn about current research and education regarding this public health threat; and now therefore be it,

Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of the State of Michigan, do hereby proclaim May 2008, as Lyme Disease Awareness Month.
