Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Month

Whereas, Nurturing fathers strengthen Michigan families and are key to children receiving the parenting they need and deserve to thrive; and,

Whereas, Fathers who actively participate in the lives of their children reduce the risks of childhood poverty, child mental illness, juvenile delinquency, youth sexual activity, teenage pregnancies, substance abuse, and failure to complete high school; and,

Whereas, Fathers who actively participate in the lives of their children enhance the children's chances of success in social skills, academic performance, adult careers and employment goals, and involved parenting skills for their future families; and,

Whereas, Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Month provides an opportunity for Michigan citizens to learn more about fatherhood issues and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who are providing advocacy efforts, resources and services to promote positive father involvement;

Now, Therefore, be it Resolved, That I, Jennifer M. Granholm, governor of the state of Michigan, do hereby proclaim February 2009 Responsible Fatherhood Awareness Month in Michigan.  I encourage all citizens to recognize the importance of responsible fatherhood and to work to strengthen our families by ensuring positive father involvement with Michigan's greatest resource, our children.
