Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth Announces Awarding of Adult Training Program Grants

Contact:  Maura Campbell (517) 373-9280
Agency: Energy, Labor & Economic Growth

September 23, 2004

The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth today announced the awarding of additional Workforce Investment Act Adult Training Program grants totaling over $1 million to the 25 Michigan Works! agencies.  The funds will be used to provide a variety of career preparation options to help Michigan residents learn about the workplace and acquire the academic and career skills that employers need.

“Employers need skilled workers, and workers need good jobs, “said Governor Jennifer Granholm.  “This funding will help give workers the skills they need to succeed in the 21-century economy- and that helps both the workers and the employees.”

Funding is made available through the federal Workforce Investment Act and is administered by the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.

The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth is the state government agency charged with providing the skilled workforce Michigan needs to enhance and maintain its economy.  To this end, the state’s career and training agency is working with employers, K-12 schools, community colleges and local Workforce Development Boards to operate a comprehensive career development system.  For more information about the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth, visit the department’s Web site at www.michigan.gov/dleg.
