The
Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth today announced statewide
Workforce Investment Act additional Dislocated Worker Program funding totaling
over $7 million. The additional funding is awarded to the 25 Michigan Works!
agencies and will focus on providing comprehensive retraining and re-employment
services tailored to workers’ individual needs, including long-term job preparation
for those workers who have been terminated or laid off, or have received notice
of termination or layoff, and are unlikely to return to their previous industry
or occupation.
“These services make it possible for
Michigan workers to receive training in a new industry or occupation and get
them back into the workforce,” said Governor Jennifer Granholm.
Funding is made available through the
federal Workforce Investment Act and is administered by the Department of Labor
& Economic Growth.
The Michigan
Department of Labor & Economic Growth is the state government agency charged
with providing the skilled workforce Michigan needs to enhance and maintain
its economy. To this end, the state’s career and training agency is working
with employers, K-12 schools, community colleges and local Workforce Development
Boards to operate a comprehensive career development system. For more information
about the Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth, visit the department’s
