June 2, 2004 - - The State Transportation Commission (STC) last week boosted Michigan's economy by awarding $51.7 million in contracts for various statewide transportation projects in May 2004.
A total of 93 projects were awarded this month: 24 state projects, 58 local projects, and 11 airport improvement projects. Each month, a competitive bid process results in an award of contracts for transportation improvements to pre-qualified, private-sector companies.
"These projects will create and retain hundreds of construction jobs in Michigan this summer," said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm.
"Preserving and improving Michigan's transportation system also increases tourism, travel and trade, and that grows our economy as well."
Some of the 93 projects improved include:
• Preserving more than 1.5 miles of US-10 between William Street and Jackson Road in Ludington (Mason County)
• More than 220 miles of preventive maintenance work on state trunklines in Alger, Chippewa, Delta, Luce, Mackinac, Menominee and Schoolcraft counties in the Upper Peninsula
• Rehabilitating three miles of County Road F-18 from Matthews Road to the Roscommon/Ogemaw county line. (Roscommon County)
• Preserving more than 2.5 miles of M-52 in Adrian Township (Lenawee County)
• Bridge rehabilitation to 10 structures along I-96 (Ingham County)
• Bridge replacement on Dixie Highway over southbound I-75 in Springfield Township (Oakland County)
• Lighting upgrades at Kirsch Municipal Airport in Sturgis (St. Joseph County)
• Rehabilitation of the taxiway at Jack Barstow Airport in Midland (Midland County).
Through May 2004, more than $500 million in transportation improvements throughout the state have been awarded by the STC this year. Ninety-five percent of the bids received for May approval were submitted electronically.
