Contact:  Benjamin Kohrman 517-335-3084
Agency: Transportation

July 2, 2004 - - The State Transportation Commission (STC) has advanced Michigan's economy by awarding more than $70 million in contracts for several statewide transportation projects for June 2004. Electronic bids made up 92 percent of the bids received.

A total of 86 projects were awarded in June: 21 state projects, 52 local projects, and 14 airport-improvement projects. Each month a competitive bid process results in an award of contracts for transportation improvements to pre-qualified, private-sector construction companies.

"Good roads, bridges, and airports aid Michigan's economy by helping us move goods and products in an efficient manner," said Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm said. "These projects also will create new jobs for Michigan workers to help speed our economic recovery."

Among many other projects, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will oversee the following:

- Replace Weiser Road bridge over Amtrak railroad (Berrien County)

- Rehabilitate more than four miles of Mackinaw Trail, from the village of Rudyard to the village of Kinross (Chippewa County)

- Expand Pellston Regional Airport (Emmet County)

- Realign and reconstruct Silver Lake Road from Leroy Street to East Street, including construction of a rail crossing in the city of Fenton (Genesee County)

- Rehabilitate Runway 3/21 at Huron County Memorial Airport in Bad Axe (Huron County)

- Reconstruct 48th Street from Thornapple Bayou Drive to Whitneyville Drive, including railroad bridge replacement (Kent County)

- Resurface and repair nearly three miles of Grand River Avenue, from Owosso Road to Burkhart Road near Howell (Livingston County)

- Reconstruct 11 Mile Road from Harper Avenue to Little Mack Avenue in St. Clair Shores (Macomb County)

- Rehabilitate more than seven miles of Sidney Road and Crystal Road in Sidney and Richland townships (Montcalm County)

- Reconstruct and improve nearly one mile of Novi Road at 10 Mile Road (Oakland County)

- Construct a non-motorized path on Adams Street from 108th/Quarterline Road to 88th Avenue (Ottawa County)

- Widen and improve Shattuck Road from Weinke Road to Center Road (Saginaw County)

- Resurface and repair nearly three miles of Carpenter Road from US-23 to York Road (Washtenaw County)

- Reconstruct and improve two miles of US-12 from I-94 to Livernois Avenue in Detroit and Dearborn (Wayne County)

In 2004, more than $703 million in transportation system improvements will be awarded during the fiscal year (Oct. 2003 to Sept. 2004). Multi-modal transportation projects include non-motorized trails, bike paths, railroad improvements, transit enhancements, airport upgrades, and various port and waterway improvements. From October 2003 through April 2004, $562 million has been awarded, which is 80 percent of the total program for the year.
