Agency: Transportation

July 19, 2004 - -The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) today announced that it is posting its quarterly newsletter for minority-and women-owned firms to the department's Web site at http://www.michigan.gov/documents/MDOT_DBEtransporterSummer_96524_7.pdf  “The Transporter" is published quarterly by MDOT's Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Program and is aimed at encouraging women and minority-owned firms to compete fairly for contracts and subcontracts within the transportation industry.

"The DBE Program is about connecting businesses with opportunities," said State Transportation Director Gloria J. Jeff. "It contributes to growing Michigan's economy by helping Michigan businesses to secure federally funded airport, highway or transit contracts in Michigan."

Jeff noted that MDOT has streamlined the process that is required in order for firms to obtain DBE certification with various transit-related agencies in Michigan. With the new Michigan Unified Certification Program (MUCP) process, there is no need for firms to apply for certification multiple times. Michigan businesses can work through MDOT or one of five regional agencies to obtain DBE certification. Eligible firms may be awarded contracts or subcontracts in the following areas: construction; engineering and surveying; consulting, real estate; maintenance; manufacturing and supply; and intelligent transportation systems.
