Agency: Environmental Quality

August 31, 2004

The Department of Environmental Quality announced today that approximately $9.3 million in Brownfield Redevelopment Grants, along with $4.9 million in loans, will be awarded to 23 communities throughout Michigan. These funds are designed to have a positive impact on the environment, protect citizens from exposure to contaminants, and provide economic benefit to the local communities by returning vacant unused properties to productive use.

Brownfields are sites of known or suspected contamination based on the historical use of the site. The Brownfield Redevelopment Program provides funding to local units of government for environmental response activities at contaminated properties where redevelopment is proposed.

Information on specific grants and loans announced today are available through the following link: http://www.deq.state.mi.us/documents/deq-exe-pressrelease-BrownfieldGrantRecipients083104.doc.

Editor’s note: DEQ news releases are available on the department’s Internet home page at www.michigan.gov/deq.
