Contact:  Brenda Peek 248-483-5109
Agency: Transportation

WHAT: Check presentation and formal announcement of the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) enhancement grant funds to local Detroit community partners. The projects are located in the Corktown and Southwest communities. They are Michigan Avenue (1-94 to Livernois) aesthetic improvements and Michigan Avenue (Rosa Parks Blvd. to 14th Street) streetscaping.

WHO: Key representatives from MDOT, the Federal Highway Administration, the city of Detroit and the following community partners: Corktown Citizen District Council, Greening of Detroit, Corktown Historical Society, Michigan Avenue Business Association, and the Southwest Detroit Business Association; and local officials and residents.

WHEN: 10 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004

WHERE: 2132 Michigan Avenue (between 14th Street and Rosa Parks Blvd.)

BACKGROUND: The transportation enhancement grant enables communities across the state to invest in projects that create people-friendly neighborhoods. Both of these projects have been awarded "Cool Cities" grants announced by Gov. Granholm in June. These grants will create walkable streets that will continue to attract businesses and workers in the 21st century. This program provides an average of 60% federal funds, with MDOT, local agencies and the private sector providing the remainder of the necessary funds.
