MDOT thanks Houghton/Hancock residents

Contact:  Dawn Garner 906-485-6322, ext. 12
Agency: Transportation

November 12, 2004 -- The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is thanking residents for their patience and cooperation over the past several months. Construction is now complete at the loop area south of the Houghton/Hancock Lift Bridge on M-28/US-41.

"We know the work zone and detours were an inconvenience to some motorists," said Alan Anderson, Ishpeming Transportation Service Center (TSC) delivery engineer. "We hope these improvements will make traveling through the area easier and safer for many years to come."

Two other safety features that were part of the project, benefit pedestrians. A pedestrian tunnel has been completed under M-26 at Lake Street to allow easy access to the waterfront park. A pedestrian ramp was also added under the lift bridge so walkers will no longer have to cross at the busy intersection.

"Houghton was recently recognized as one of America's most walkable cities," said Andy Sikkema, Ishpeming TSC manager. "We are glad to help further that reputation with these projects."

A dedication of the new tunnel will be scheduled for the spring.
