November 23, 2004 - -Forty-four states including Michigan will receive federal grants totaling $1.6 million to assist statewide transit agencies in coordinating transportation services for those who need it most -- older adults, people with disabilities and low-income families. The Michigan Department of Transportation announced today that Michigan will receive a $35,000 grant.
The grants are part of the United We Ride program, a five-part initiative designed by the federal government to support human transportation coordination efforts. In addition to grants, United We Ride includes a self-assessment tool for state and local agencies, technical assistance, and other resources to help communities succeed.
"United We Ride encourages human service transportation providers to work together by pooling resources targeted at increasing mobility throughout Michigan," said State Transportation Director, Gloria J. Jeff. "We are excited about this initiative that gives our customers better service while creating efficiencies that make taxpayer dollars go further."
The grant, administered by the Federal Transit Administration in coordination with MDOT, will help Michigan become more efficient in managing transportation resources specifically for seniors, the disabled, and the disadvantaged. Funds will further the development of resource coordination for federal, state, and local programs that offer transportation services.
