December 2, 2004 - - The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) will hold the second Transportation Summit on Dec. 15, 2004, at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing.
In the latter half of 2003, Transportation Summit Planning Teams met to discuss nine key issues: 1) Asset Management; 2) Research and Evaluation; 3) Land Use; 4) Need for Mobility Options (Urban and Rural); 5) Communication, Consciousness Raising and Public Involvement; 6) Safety; 7) Commerce and Trade; 8) Coordination, Cooperation and Connectivity; and 9) Funding.
Finally, in December 2003, after two days of cooperative decision-making involving 500 on-site participants and two-way interaction via the Internet, the Michigan Transportation Summit published its collective vision for a 21st century transportation system:
Michigan will lead the 21st century transportation revolution as it led innovation in the 20th century. We will move people and goods with a safe, integrated, and efficient transportation system that embraces all modes, is equitably and adequately funded, and socially and environmentally responsible. Michigan's transportation community will work together to ensure that resources are in place to deliver the system.
"The primary objective of this year's Summit is to bring our partners back to the table, review the work that's been done over the past year, and determine where we go from here," said MDOT Director Gloria Jeff regarding the Summit. "The goal, of course, is to continue to develop Michigan's transportation system into one that makes every citizen mobile, fuels our economy, and enhances our quality of life in every community."
The upcoming Summit will result in a shared vision regarding all aspects of Michigan transportation, agreements on roles and responsibilities for various transportation organizations, and a sound scheduling and monitoring process regarding transportation-related activities.
