MDOT hosts Context Sensitive Design Stakeholder Workshop

June 16, 2004 - -The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) hosted a workshop June 15, 2004, which was designed to broaden the understanding of Context Sensitive Design (CSD) as it applies to transportation projects across the state. CSD encourages incorporating innovative design to meet the needs of specific sites rather than applying standardized solutions. The workshop afforded various stakeholders the opportunity to share perspectives, identify common interests, and join focus groups that will work with an MDOT facilitator throughout the summer in order to develop specific recommendations to help MDOT design a CSD program which addresses stakeholders' concerns. MDOT will host another stakeholder workshop in the fall to discuss the recommendations.

"CSD is another example of the new, stronger partnerships between MDOT and local communities that contribute to the department's commitment to growing Michigan's economy and preserving Michigan’s unique quality of life," said State Transportation Director Gloria J. Jeff.

The workshop opened with a presentation by Jeff that highlighted the department's CSD activities. Keith Moore of the Federal Highway Administration delivered a presentation detailing the national perspective. CSD is a process for project development that considers the community context while effectively and safely meeting the transportation functions. Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm released an Executive Directive in December 2003 which further defines CSD: "a collaborative, interdisciplinary approach involving stakeholders for the development of a transportation facility which fits its physical setting, and preserves scenic, aesthetic, historic and environmental resources, while maintaining safety and mobility."

Approximately 40 stakeholder groups were represented among the 60 workshop participants, including advocates for non-motorized transportation, elderly mobility, rail and public transit, transportation industry groups, local units of government, environmental groups, and state and federal agencies. The workshop was held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn Lansing Conference Center.
