Robert J. Kleine was appointed Michigan's 43rd State Treasurer by Governor Jennifer M. Granholm, effective April 9, 2006. As Treasurer, Mr. Kleine oversees the collection, investment, and disbursement of all state monies. In addition, the Treasurer administers major tax laws, safeguards the credit of the state, and distributes revenue sharing monies to local units of government.
Mr. Kleine recently worked as a private economic consultant. He also served as Vice President and Senior Economist at Public Sector Consultants for 15 years. During the William Milliken Administration, Mr. Kleine was Director of the Office of Revenue and Tax Analysis for 10 years. Mr. Kleine was also a Senior Fellow at the Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations and an Adjunct Professor at Michigan State University, teaching public finance.
A graduate of Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College), Kleine holds a masters degree from Michigan State University. Kleine and his wife, Judy Karandjeff, live in East Lansing.
