BACKGROUND: On July 25, Governor Jennifer M. Granholm in Detroit - and MDOT Director Kirk Steudle in Grand Rapids - announced $44 million in Local Jobs Today funding going to 47 county road commissions and 49 cities to jumpstart 210 local road construction projects, creating 4,991 jobs. The funding will help cities and counties to leverage $279 million in transportation funds, provide much-needed road improvements, and stimulate economic development all across the state.

Ultimately, the program will leverage a total $87 million of state investment in local federal match grants to secure approximately $347 million of federal funds, totaling more than $420 million and creating up to 7,100 jobs in 2006 and 2007.

This first round of Local Jobs Today announcements includes more than $6 million in local match dollars for the Upper Peninsula and leverages nearly $36.3 million in investment in the region, bringing with it 654 local jobs.

The Local Jobs Today program is part of Governor Granholm's comprehensive economic plan to create jobs and grow Michigan's economy.
