The Library of Michigan Foundation today announced that former Michigan Governor William G. Milliken, former Detroit News political columnist George Weeks and Dave Dempsey - author of "William G. Milliken: Michigan's Passionate Moderate," a Michigan Notable Book for 2007 - will serve as the featured speakers for the "Night for Notables" on Saturday, April 14. A tribute to the sagas spun by the 2007 Michigan Notable Books authors, the program takes place from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Library of Michigan and includes book signings with many of the Notables authors.
"Any one of these fascinating speakers would be a highlight, but bringing them all together on one stage makes for a truly unforgettable evening," said Judith K. Moore, executive director of the Library of Michigan Foundation. "With the added opportunity to meet the talented Michigan Notable Books authors who've painted a unique portrait of our state, Night for Notables offers a one-of-a-kind view of Michigan's heritage and rich literary tradition."
"I'm pleased to be part of this evening that focuses on the people, places, stories and literary talent that consistently set Michigan apart," said former Governor Milliken. "I encourage anybody who loves to read, has a passion for Michigan or wants to get to know our home state a little better to join in this special celebration."
State Librarian Nancy Robertson will lead the evening, which starts with desserts and wine at 7 p.m. Guests will have the chance to win five of the Notable Books titles signed by their authors. Copies of all the 2007 Michigan Notable Books will be available for purchase. "Night for Notables" is open to all, with tickets priced at $25 per person. A portion of the evening's proceeds will be used to support the Library of Michigan's special collections and programs.

"William G. Milliken: Michigan's Passionate Moderate," published by University of Michigan Press, explores the life and career of Michigan's 44th and longest-serving governor (1969-1982). Milliken's Republican tenure reflected his belief in civility, decency and support for the environment, while also revealing his strength in building effective coalitions, such as with Detroit Mayor Coleman Young. Milliken's moderate views are frequently at odds with today's political landscape, making this accessible biography more relevant and inspiring.
The Michigan Notable Books list is the Library of Michigan's annual selection of recommended books that reflect the state's rich cultural heritage by highlighting Michigan people, places and events. Each year's list features 20 books published the previous calendar year that are about or set in Michigan or the Great Lakes region or are written by a native or resident of Michigan. Selections include nonfiction and fiction and typically have a wide appeal to the audience, covering a range of topics and issues close to the hearts of Michigan residents. The 2007 Michigan Notable Books program is sponsored by Borders, Cooley Law School, ProQuest, Auto-Owners Insurance Company, Fifth Third Bank, LaSalle Bank, the Library of Michigan, the Library of Michigan Foundation, the Michigan Center for the Book, the Michigan Humanities Council, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and Schuler Books & Music. Media partners for this project are WKAR and the Lansing State Journal.
The Michigan Notable Books program is designed to promote reading and raise awareness of Michigan's strong literary heritage. Throughout April and May, many of the 2007 Michigan Notable Books authors will take their stories on the road, visiting libraries throughout the state - 67 stops in all - to talk with the public about their books. A full schedule of author visits is available on the Michigan Notable Books Web site.
