New York State Ancestors

Abrams Collection Genealogy Highlights
Spring 2005
Volume 7, Number 2

Between 1825 and 1845, many New Yorkers migrated and settled in Michigan. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 greatly aided the westward migration of New Yorkers to the Great Lakes region by allowing people to travel inexpensively by water to the sparsely settled Northwest Territory, for which Michigan was then an important entry point.

These former New Yorkers would go on to shape early Michigan politics, culture and history. In addition, Michigan place names such as Albion, Genesee, Oneida, Otsego, Rochester, Troy and Utica are an enduring testimony to our state's New York heritage. In fact, 12 of our state's governors were born in New York, more than any other state outside of Michigan.

This publication is a list of notable New York genealogy resources available at the Library of Michigan. Titles may be located by searching ANSWER, the Library's online catalog. Clicking on the links in this publication will take you to the ANSWER catalog search results or the catalog record for a particular item. The easiest way to locate New York resources in ANSWER is with a keyword search using the phrases new york or new york city or new york state, followed by the type of information you are looking for. Here are some additional suggestions to help maximize your search results:

Adding a geographic location will allow you to narrow your search. For example, new york genealogy and albany county will retrieve genealogical resources that focus on Albany County, New York. When searching by keyword, it is not necessary to capitalize proper nouns.
