Disaster can strike at any time! Will your institution be prepared?
In 2006, the Society of American Archivists launched the MayDay initiative! Many American cultural institutions now observe May 1st - or MayDay - through disaster preparedness activities. Some take steps towards creating or finishing disaster plans. Others review existing plans. Other potential measures include staging evacuation drills and attending disaster preparedness courses. For more information - and suggestions for participation, click Society of American Archivists Mayday Site.
For May Day 2007, the Archives of Michigan completed the Pocket Response Plan (or PReP Card), a form created by the Council of State Archivists (COSA). For 2008, archivists reviewed the plan, making updates as needed. PReP cards contain all important emergency response information and can be carried in an archivist's pocket. To see the Archives of Michigan PreP card - and to learn how to create your own - click Archives of Michigan Emergency Preparedness and Conservation Site.
The Archives of Michigan created its Emergency Preparedness and Conservation Site as a resource for Michigan cultural institutions. In the spirit of MayDay, the Archives also reviewed this page and checked all the links contained therein. We are pleased to continue offering this resource and encourage its use.
