The Michigan Historical Commission has been the public arm of state history programs since 1913. It advises the director of the Department of History, Arts and Libraries and approves Michigan Historical Markers. The governor appoints commission members to four-year terms.
Each year the Michigan Historical Commission presents the Governor John B. Swainson Awardto state and local government employees who do not work in the field of history but have made exceptional contributions to preserving and interpreting the stories of Michigan's past.

Unless noted otherwise, Michigan Historical Commission meetings are held in the Lake Superior Room, next to the Allegan Street entrance of the Michigan Library and Historical Center. All meetings begin at 1 p.m. and are open to the public.
The Michigan Library and Historical Center is located at 702 West Kalamazoo Street, Lansing. Visitor parking is on the north side of Kalamazoo Street, two blocks east of M. L. King Jr. Boulevard. Here's more information about how to find us.
