These one-hour sessions provide hands-on learning about Michigan's rich craft heritage.

The Art of the Tinsmith
Grade 2 and up

Who was the tinsmith? What did he make? Learn about the art of the tinsmith and create a tin-punch picture to take home.

A Candle in the Window
Grade 2 and up

What is a "Betty Lamp?" When did oil lamps come into use? What types of waxes were available to Michigan's settlers? Create a pair of traditional beeswax candles as you learn about early lighting.

Old-Time Toys and Games
All grades

What did children do before TV, DVDs and video games? You will play with wooden toys, learn traditional games and make a toy to take home. Guaranteed to beat the "I'm bored" blues!

Trade Beads
Grade 1 and up

European trade beads were valued by Michigan's Native Americans. Learn how the beads were made and create your own trade beads and necklace.

The Warp and Weft: Learn to Weave
Grade 1 and up

In this mechanized and computerized world, cloth and clothing are quickly created. Where did Michigan's early settlers get their cloth? Learn the history and skills of weaving as you help create a museum wall hanging. Make a simple loom to take home.
