Information About the Swainson Award

Circa 1962 photo of Governor John B. Swainson

The Governor John B. Swainson Award is presented by the Michigan Historical Commission to state, county or municipal employees who have contributed to the preservation of Michigan history even though such activities are not part of their primary job responsibility. The Commission nominates and selects the recipients, who are recognized at a ceremony in Lansing during Michigan Week.

The Michigan Historical Commission established this award in 1996 in honor of John B. Swainson, Michigan's 40th governor and one of the few public officials to have served in all three branches of state government. Devoted to public service, Swainson's commanding presence, humanity and love of Michigan made him a powerful advocate for the state's history. Swainson's last role in public service was as president of the Michigan Historical Commission, a post he held at his death in 1994.

See information about the 2006 Swainson Award recipient.

The Governor John B. Swainson Award will be given at the Capitol, June 4, 2008.
