0-5 Developmental Timeline

One Month

  • Raises head slightly when lying on stomach
  • Holds head up briefly when supported
  • Briefly watches and follows objects with eyes
  • Some "noise in throat" sounds
Two Months
  • Holds head erect, bobbing, when supported in sitting position
  • Follows moving person with eyes
  • Imitates or responds to smiling person with occasional smile
  • Vocalizes
Three Months
  • Vigorous body movement
  • Head control improving
  • Coos and chuckles
Four Months
  • Rolls from side to side
  • Takes object held near hand
  • Laughs aloud
  • Enjoys play
Six Months
  • Transfers objects from hand to hand and from hand to mouth
  • Babbles – more than two sounds
  • Rolls from back to stomach
Nine Months
  • Plays with 2 objects at the same time
  • Creeps or crawls
  • Says mama – baba
Twelve Months (1 Year)
  • Picks things up with thumb and one finger
  • Pulls self to standing with step or support
  • May say 2 or 3 words
  • Follows simple directions accompanied by gestures
Fifteen Months
  • May walk without support
  • Vocalizes – voice up and down sounds like conversation
  • May use 4 or 5 words
  • Some self feeding
Eighteen Months
  • Likes pull toys
  • Likes being read to
  • Makes mark with crayon on paper or table
  • May use 5-10 words
24 Months (2 Years)
  • Kicks large ball
  • Turn pages (2 or 3 at a time)
  • Asks for items by name
  • Uses 2 or 3 words together, such as "more juice"
36 Months (3 Years)
  • Rides tricycle
  • Feeds self
  • Verbalizes toilet needs
  • Walks up stairs
48 Months (4 Years)
  • Copies circle
  • Points to 8 basic colors
  • Knows own age, sex, last name
60 Months (5 Years)
  • Prints a few capital letters
  • Answers verbally to "Hi" and "How are you?"
  • Recognizes own printed name
