Letters about Literature
READ. BE INSPIRED. WRITE BACK.
The Michigan Center for the Book and the Library of Michigan participate in the annual Letters about Literature program from the Library of Congress, in partnership with Target Stores. This national reading-writing
contest invites readers in grades 4 through 12 to write letters to authors of books that have changed their lives.
For the 2008 program, we received many heartfelt, thoughtful letters. Thanks to the students who participated in the 2008 program and congratulations to our three winners.
The 2008 winners are:
*Phoebe Brown of Birmingham for her letter to Sarah Miller about Miss Spitfire. Level I (Grades 4-6)
*Gabrielle Montesanti of Howell for her letter to Jesse Stuart about Come to My Tomorrowland. - Level II (Grades 7-8)
*Katelynn Wright of Battle Creek for her letter to Gerda Weissman Klein about All But My Life. - Level III (Grades 9-12)
2008 Winning Letters
LAL Winners Press Release
2009 Timeline: Children and young adults may submit letters individually or as part of a school
or library project. 2009 letters must be submitted by December 14, 2008. Winners will
announced in April 2009.
Judging: Letters are reviewed by the National LAL staff, who select
semi-finalists. Volunteer teachers and librarians from Michigan select a state winner for
each level from the semi-finalists. Volunteer judges at the national level select national
winners from the state winners.
Prizes:
*Semi-Finalists receive a letter of recognition from the State Librarian.
*State Winners receive a letter of recogition from the State Librarian, a $50 Target
gift certificate, and a $300 donation to their school or public libraries for the children
or young adult collections.
*National Honorable Mention Winners will receive a $100 Target gift card and a $1,000 for
their community or school library.
*National Winners will receive a $500 Target gift card and a $10,000 for their community or
school library.

Best Practices and New Directions in Teen Services
Best Practices and New Directions in Teen Services with Patrick Jones The Library of Michigan and the Michigan Library Association's Teen Services Division collaborated to provide an excellent professional development experience for teen librarians. This workshop was presented by the author of Connecting Young Adults and Libraries and Things Change, Patrick Jones. Patrick has generously posted his PowerPoint presentations online, so that all may benefit from his expertise with teens.
