The Archives of Michigan protects and preserves the most significant public records created by Michigan government agencies. Less than five percent of the public records created and used by government employees fall into this category. But most government offices produce some important public records that should be preserved permanently.
The Archives of Michigan provides assistance to local government agencies with concerns about records preservation issues. Some local government records are authorized for transfer to the Archives of Michigan for preservation when the creating agency no longer needs them to support administrative, legal and fiscal responsibilities.
Part of the Local Government Records Program is the Regional Depository System, a system of archives around Michigan which, in cooperation with the Archives of Michigan, store local government records that have been transferred to the Archives.
