Many federal census indexes are available at the Library of Michigan; the Detroit Society for Genealogical Research indexed 1710-1830 and 1840; the Michigan Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Michigan Genealogical Council indexed 1850; and the Library of Michigan indexed 1870. Other indexes were published by Accelerated Indexing Systems.

Centennial Family Certificates were issued by the Michigan Genealogical Council in 1976. A person directly descended from a Michigan resident of 100 years or more ago was eligible to receive recognition. Fire insurance maps from the Sanborn Map Company archives provide detailed historical maps of many cities and towns of Michigan. The majority of the maps are from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. Although the names of individuals do not appear on the maps, business names, addresses, and other details are shown. Used in conjunction with a known street address obtained from a city directory or other source, a Sanborn map can often be used to pinpoint the exact place an ancestor lived.
