Cultural Economic Development Online Tool
Bullet-point Summary

Michigan Department of History, Arts and Libraries Office of Cultural Economic Development

CULTURAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ONLINE TOOL (CEDOT)

+ The CEDOT Program is a combination of web-based tools designed to collect and provide the state's cultural sector and stakeholders with current and accessible economic, market and tourism information.

+ The web-based tools allow users to estimate cultural spending and the associated economic impacts in terms of jobs, sales, income, and added value for museums, festivals, cultural tourism, etc.

+ This information is valuable for advocacy, grant writing, community outreach, trend analysis, measuring cultural consumerism and preferences and demonstrating return on investments.

+ The tool will include:

1. a reoccurring household survey of cultural participation and consumerism,

2. panels representing different aspects of the cultural sector,

3. a convenient to use web-based tool for estimating the economic impacts of cultural tourism and visits to communities and,

4. a set of scientific case studies documenting and describing different types of cultural economic development.

+ Sector panels provide essential information needed to develop CEDOT products and results including the economic impact tool.

+ A panel is a group of participants, representing various parts of the sector, who register and agree to complete periodic surveys related to their disciplines and interests.

+ Your participation as a panelist is critical for data collection. The registration form takes about ten minutes to complete.

+ The surveys administered to different panels will ask questions on various cultural issues in addition to collecting information (e.g., budgets, staffing) needed to develop and calibrate the economic impact tool.

+ There are eight panels; artists, arts education organizations, cultural product distributors and retailers, fairs and festival producers, historic preservation, library institutions, library users, and cultural organizations. Panels for museums and performing arts venues are being developed.

+ To register for a panel go to: http://www.culturaleconomicpanels.msu.edu/

+ For more information contact the research team (Ed Mahoney or Lori Langone) at MSU by email at rirc@msu.edu or by calling (517) 432-0292.
