Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP)?

The Michigan Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is a federally funded, low-income residential energy conservation program providing free home energy conservation services to low-income Michigan homeowners and renters. These services reduce home energy use and lower utility bills.

How do I apply for WAP?

Contact the local Weatherization Operator serving your county (there are 5 weatherization operators in Wayne County, each serving specific communities). Refer to the State Map of Weatherization Operators.

What determines the measures that will be installed on my home?

The work to be completed will be dependent upon a trained inspector’s findings on individual homes and the funds available. A computerized audit will determine the most cost-effective measures to be completed on your home. There are program limitations relative to the types of measures that can be addressed and costs.

Will the contractors need to cut holes in my roof or sidewall to install vents or insulation?

Attic and sidewall insulation are generally the most cost effective energy conservation measures. Proper venting is essential to allow adequate air circulation in your attic and eliminate condensation problems. With sidewall installation, most siding will be lifted, but in some cases, it is necessary to drill through the siding. The inspector will be able to let you know how this will be addressed.

How do I know if I am getting quality material and workmanship?

The Department of Human Services (DHS) requires material to meet or exceed state and federal quality standards and testing requirements. All homes are inspected once work is completed to insure the work was properly done. Contractors and agencies are monitored by DHS for quality control.

Is the work guaranteed?

The state licensing laws require contractors to be responsible for work completed for 18 months.

What are the benefits of Weatherization?

Reduced heating bills of 20-25%, a less drafty and more comfortable home.

If I am found eligible, how long before my home is weatherized?

The length of time varies in different parts of the state, from one month to one year. Senior citizens, handicapped individuals, and families receiving state assistance are prioritized.
