Michigan National Guard Soldiers to be honored Sunday, September 7 for Iraq deployment

TAYLOR, MICH. - Approximately 100 Soldiers from the Taylor based 177th Military Police Brigade Michigan Army National Guard, will be honored Sunday in recognition of their May 2007 to June 2008 deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The "Freedom Salute" celebration will be held at the Harry S. Truman High School gym, 11211 Beech Daly Road in Taylor Beginning at 9 a.m.

The Freedom Salute ceremony is a national program that honors the families, employers, and other "centers of influence of National Guard Soldiers." It is the largest Army National Guard Soldier recognition endeavor in history. The ceremony is meant to show Soldiers that their country honors them and that their service to our nation is truly appreciated.

While deployed, the 177th Military Police were in charge of detainee operations in Northern Iraq. The brigade worked directly for Task Force 134, commanded by U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Douglas Stone. Task Force 134, the task force charged with detainee command and control, ensures due process and assists Iraqi teams trying to rebuild the judicial, correctional and law enforcement system.

Simultaneously, the 177th helped the Government of Iraq train a professional Iraqi Correctional Officer guard force; provided support for the Government of Iraq's Rule of Law initiatives; facilitated Task Force 134 directives for detainee education, training and reintegration; and engaged world media with the 177th's mission. "The Soldiers of the 177th MP Brigade brought a level of discipline and responsibility that raised the bar on detainee operations," commander Brig. Gen. Michael Nevin said. "Thousands of detainees were evaluated, cleared and released to their communities as peaceful and productive citizens."

At the April 18 change of command ceremony in Iraq Nevin told the Soldiers, "You came into a situation that needed dignity and respect. You brought dignity and respect and it became the baseline. It became the foundation for all of Task Force 134 successes."

Today, approximately 1,800 Michigan National Guard Soldiers and Airmen are deployed across the globe in support of the global war on terrorism; however, as the Michigan Guard serves the nation abroad, more than 85percent of the force is available, trained and ready to respond to a state emergency including a terrorist event.
