The Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) today announced the award of an additional $2,907,500 in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families funding to 12 Michigan Works! Agencies.  The funding will be used to provide additional funds for employment-related supportive services for individuals participating in the Work First Program.

"This funding helps provide the training and support services that people need in order to become employed," said Governor Jennifer Granholm.

Work First is designed to establish and maintain a connection to the labor market for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families recipients, non-custodial parents, and recipients of noncash assistance such a childcare, Medicaid and Food Stamps.  To make this connection, participants are placed into employment and occupationally relevant education and training programs.  The Work First Program is administered statewide by 25 locally governed Michigan Works! Agencies and Workforce Development Boards.

The Department of Labor & Economic Growth is the state government agency charged with providing the skilled workforce Michigan needs to enhance and maintain its economy.  To this end, the state's career and training development agency is working with employers, K-12 schools, community colleges, and local Workforce Development Boards to develop a comprehensive career development system.  For more information about the Department of Labor & Economic Growth, visit the department's Web site at www.michigan.gov/dleg.
