November 10, 2009 - Michigan's Automobile and Home Insurance Consumer Advocate Butch Hollowell talks with students about teen driver safety in the latest episode of "Insurance 101 with Butch Hollowell," set to begin airing this week on cable stations throughout the state.

In this episode, Hollowell goes on location to the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy to discuss a range of teen driving issues, such as distracted driving and driving while impaired, with U of D and Farmington Hills Mercy High School students. Joining Hollowell is Officer Lawrence Smith of the Detroit Police Department, who puts the students through an impaired driving simulation exercise and shares his insight into risks teen drivers face.

"Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death for teens aged 15-19 years," Hollowell said. "In this very special episode of ‘Insurance 101,' we give students a chance to share their viewpoints and learn about some ways they can become better drivers. And parents get tips on how to assist in this effort, and how to save on their premiums in the process."

"Insurance 101 with Butch Hollowell," a monthly show, is aimed at educating consumers about automobile and home insurance issues. The 30-minute program explains confusing insurance terms in plain language, answers individual consumers' insurance-related questions, and provides viewers with helpful tips and tools so that they are well-prepared to buy the best insurance coverage for the money.

Hollowell hosts the show and interviews invited guests, including insurance agents and experts from the insurance industry. A regular feature of the show is an "Ask the Advocate" segment in which a consumer asks Hollowell an insurance-related question.

"Insurance 101 with Butch Hollowell" has been released to more than 80 cable stations statewide and is expected to run multiple times throughout each month. New shows are produced monthly. Check local listings for air dates and times. Previous episodes can be viewed by visiting the Insurance Advocate website at www.michigan.gov/lowerratesnow.

As Michigan's Automobile and Home Insurance Consumer Advocate, Hollowell works to educate consumers on how to protect themselves against predatory or illegal insurance practices and coordinate advocacy and educational efforts with non-governmental consumer advocacy entities and other organizations.
