MLCC Reminds Citizens to Enjoy St. Patrick's Day in Good Health Keep Yourself and Friends Safe by Avoiding Binge Drinking

MARCH 15, 2010 (Lansing) -- Drinking celebrations will be taking place all over Michigan with people toasting to the Irish with as many shots and pints they can drink in as short of time possible (binge drinking). This ritual has turned March 17 into one of the most alcohol fueled days of the year.

"We know that St. Patrick's Day is a day of celebration however, we want to remind individuals to be safe and responsible in their consumption of alcohol. It is the responsibility of our licensees to know that over serving or selling to minors is never overlooked," said Nida Samona, Chairperson of the Michigan Liquor Control Commission (MLCC). "Licensees who are not responsible and don't act within the laws of the State of Michigan and the MLCC Rules could face penalties with fines up to $1,000 with the possibility of suspension or the revocation of their license."

Binge drinking occurs when a man consumes five or more drinks or a woman consumes four or more drinks in a short period of time. Because women metabolize alcohol less efficiently than men and usually have less body mass, they become more intoxicated with a comparable number of drinks. One drink is generally calculated as a 12 oz. bottle of beer or wine cooler, a 5 oz glass of wine or 1.5 oz of 80-proof distilled spirits.

"It is our role to ensure responsible licensees never forget that the health, safety and welfare of our citizens is our top priority," said Samona.

Sadly, binge drinking is a year-long problem among young adults. Parents need to be aware that there is gaining popularity on college campuses of drinking games, particularly in celebration of the 21st birthday, and MLCC encourages them to discuss the dangers of alcohol poisoning.

If you are going out to party this St. Patrick's Day, please remember that just because the beer is green, it does not stop you from the side effects of binge drinking and the dangers of driving intoxicated.
