MARCH 16, 2010 - The Michigan Commission on Spanish Speaking Affairs (COSSA) is inviting volunteers to register online to be part of Hispanic Advocacy Day in Lansing on April 20-21.
Volunteers can register in advance online by going to www.michigan.gov/cossa and clicking on "Michigan Hispanic Advocacy Day" or going directly to http://www.michigan.gov/mdcd/0,1607,7-122-1683_3064_3073-232280--,00.html. Registrants are encouraged to list their state representative and senator. The invitation to join the event is also on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=357619798579.
"We are looking for hundreds of Hispanic advocates to come to Lansing to be a part of grassroots demonstration of the strength and unity of the Michigan Hispanic community," said COSSA Chairman Lawrence Garcia. "If you are interested in issues affecting Michigan's Hispanic and Latino residents, please sign up today so that you can be a part of this exciting event and have your voice heard in Lansing."
COSSA is partnering with Hispanic organizations, leaders and volunteers for this first time event to meet with state lawmakers and participate in 36 hours of advocacy activities on April 20-21. The Michigan Hispanic Legislative Caucus (led by State Sen. Valde Garcia, State Rep. John Espinoza and State Rep. Lee Gonzales) has confirmed participation in the event. State and nationally-recognized Latino leaders are also being invited to attend.

The Commission on Spanish-Speaking Affairs was created in 1975 to serve Michigan's Hispanic population which is currently the second-largest and fastest-growing minority group in Michigan. The Commission, which is made up of 15 individuals appointed by the Governor, advises the Governor and Legislature on policies and plans to serve the needs of Hispanics in Michigan.
