MPSC Designates Michigan 2-1-1 as Statewide 2-1-1 Coordinating Agency for 2010-2011

Contact:  Judy Palnau (517) 241-3323

March 18, 2010

The Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) today designated Michigan 2-1-1 as the statewide 2-1-1 coordinating agency from April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011.

The abbreviated dialing number 2-1-1 has been assigned by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to enable callers to reach community resource and referral answering points.

Michigan 2-1-1 on Feb. 1 provided the MPSC with its annual progress report outlining the current state of 2-1-1 availability in Michigan and funding information.

In today's order, the MPSC notes that 11 counties were approved to receive 2-1-1 abbreviated dialing during 2009, bringing the population served to 80 percent.  The remaining counties have begun to take steps toward expanding 2-1-1 service to their areas.

Michigan 2-1-1 was also directed by the MPSC today to file by Feb. 1, 2011 current information on funding, advances made in 2-1-1 availability in Michigan, a 2011 business plan, and any changes from its original application.

The MPSC is an agency within the Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth.

Case No. U-14725
