December 29, 2005

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Department of Labor and Economic Growth Director David Hollister have announced $8,600,073 in federal funding to improve the job training and education provided to workers who have lost their jobs because of foreign competition.

The funding will go towards the operation of the Michigan Works! Trade program, which provides training, and job search and relocation assistance across the state. All 25 Michigan Works! service centers will receive funding.

“We want to help those who have lost their jobs quickly learn new skills so they can reenter our workforce,” Granholm said. “Jobs aren’t just paychecks, they are the glue that holds strong families and strong communities together.”

Funding for the operation of trade programs in the Michigan Works! service centers is made available by the federal Trade Adjustment Assistance program, administered through the Department of Labor & Economic Growth.

The Department of Labor & Economic Growth (DLEG) is investing in Michigan's future by helping to create the jobs of today and tomorrow, ensuring that our children and adults have the skills these jobs demand, making Michigan a better place to do business, and training and placing those who need jobs now.
